MERCED COUNTY – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will perform a long-term traffic shift of northbound State Route 99 (SR-99) and extended full closures of the Atwater Boulevard on and off-ramps in the city of Atwater, as work progresses on the SR-99 Atwater Rehabilitation Project.  Two travel lanes will remain open on northbound and southbound SR-99 during this traffic shift.

Beginning Sunday, June 26, 2022, the #2 (right) lane of northbound SR-99 will be shifted to the new pavement on the median of northbound SR-99, from just north of the Atwater Expressway Overcrossing to south of Westside Boulevard Overcrossing.

The #1 (left) lane of northbound SR-99 will remain shifted to the median of southbound SR-99 as motorists will then travel northbound between temporary k-rail (concrete barrier) on southbound SR-99 and the newly constructed center median barrier.  While traveling between these barriers, motorists will not have access to off-ramps to exit the highway.

Additionally, the Atwater Boulevard on-ramp on northbound SR-99 (only) will be closed to traffic beginning Sunday, June 26, 2022, and Atwater Boulevard off-ramp will be closed to traffic beginning Sunday, July 17, 2022and will require the following detour routes that will be marked with roadside signage:

NORTHBOUND SR-99 ATWATER BOULEVARD ROAD OFF-RAMP DETOUR:

  • Exit northbound SR-99 at Applegate Road (Exit 195), turn right on Sycamore Avenue, turn left at Applegate Road, turn right at Atwater Boulevard

NORTHBOUND SR-99 ATWATER BOULEVARD ON-RAMP DETOUR:

  • From all locations within the city of Atwater, use the Applegate Road on-ramp to northbound SR-99

Motorists should expect 10 to 15-minute delays. Alternate routes should be taken whenever possible.

These traffic shifts and ramp closures are required to ensure the safety of both construction workers and the travelling public.  Motorists are reminded that speed limits will be reduced to 55 miles per hour within the work zone.

The SR-99 Atwater Rehabilitation Project will repave and make improvements to over 16 lane miles of northbound and southbound SR-99 from Buhach Road to Westside Boulevard, providing a smoother and more reliable route for commuters and commercial vehicles through the city of Atwater.

The project also calls for the reconstruction of the on- and off-ramps at Applegate Road and at Atwater Boulevard.  The project is estimated to be complete by December 2022.

This work is scheduled to begin as listed, but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment, and/or materials and construction related issues.  For the safety of workers and other motorists, please Be Work Zone Alert.
